Preserving the Sacred Heights: A Commitment to Wedihiti Kanda
The Wedihiti Kanda temple, perched atop one of the seven sacred hills of Kataragama, is far more than a destination for pilgrims; it is a living testament to our spiritual history and ecological heritage. However, the increasing footfall at such a significant site often brings the unintended challenge of environmental degradation. Recognizing this, our project team recently stepped forward to conduct an intensive cleanup and preservation initiative aimed at restoring the temple’s natural and sacred environment.
Our mission went beyond simply collecting litter. We focused on the systematic restoration of the climbing paths and the temple surroundings, ensuring that the physical space reflects the reverence it deserves. But a clean area only stays clean if the mindset of its visitors changes. This is why the core of our project is awareness. We are working to educate visitors on the vital importance of "leaving no trace," emphasizing that every piece of waste removed is a step toward honoring the deity and the land.
The true beneficiaries of this effort are the future generations. If we allow our heritage sites to dwindle into neglect today, the youth of tomorrow will lose their tangible connection to their roots. By protecting Wedihiti Kanda now, we are safeguarding a legacy of peace and tradition. We believe that through this project, we can inspire a sense of stewardship in every pilgrim, ensuring that this sacred peak remains a pristine sanctuary of worship for centuries to come. Protecting our past is the greatest gift we can give to our future.
