Bak Full Moon Poya Day
Bak Full Moon Poya Day is an important religious day for Buddhists, especially in Sri Lanka. This Poya day is usually celebrated in April and is closely connected with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season. Bak Poya reminds people about peace, unity, and the teachings of Lord Buddha.
According to Buddhist history, Bak Poya marks the Buddha’s second visit to Sri Lanka. It is believed that the Buddha came to Nagadeepa to settle a conflict between two Naga kings, Chulodara and Mahodara, who were about to fight over a jeweled throne. Through His wisdom and compassion, the Buddha stopped the battle and taught them the value of peace and understanding. Because of this event, Bak Poya is remembered as a day that highlights harmony and reconciliation.
On this day, many Buddhists visit temples early in the morning. They observe sil (precepts), listen to Dhamma sermons, meditate, and take part in religious activities. Devotees also offer flowers, light oil lamps, and chant pirith to show respect to the Buddha. These practices help people calm their minds and focus on good thoughts and actions.
Bak Poya is also a time to practice kindness and generosity. People try to help others, give alms, and share food with those in need. Families often spend time together and encourage children to learn about Buddhist values such as compassion, patience, and honesty.
In modern society, Bak Full Moon Poya Day reminds everyone about the importance of living peacefully with others. It teaches us that problems can be solved through understanding rather than conflict. By following the teachings of the Buddha, people can build a better and more harmonious society.
Therefore, Bak Poya is not only a religious observance but also a meaningful day that encourages peace, unity, and positive living in our daily lives. 🌕🙏
