International Day of Human Solidarity

International Day of Human Solidarity

International Day of Human Solidarity is celebrated every 20 December as a day for awareness of how we work together for our shared goals as peoples of many cultures. It is also a reminder to each of us to recognize the importance we place on being united through respect for human dignity, diversity, and peace.

In 2005, the United Nations declared that it was a day to commemorate the need for solidarity in order to achieve sustainable development and eliminate global poverty. Today, as globalisation and interdependence continue to grow, we have many global challenges we face such as poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, war, and poor health; and just as importantly, these problems cannot be solved by countries acting alone. Acts of human solidarity encourage cooperation, shared responsibilities and support across borders in order to help combat these issues.

At its most basic level, human solidarity means standing with all people as we assist those who are most vulnerable in society. It requires us to support the efforts of all persons working to achieve respect for human rights; to promote social justice; and to promote equality within society. We have an obligation to assist those affected by disasters and conflicts, as well as to assist individuals suffering from economic hardship and ensure that no person is left behind. Acts of human solidarity can take many different forms; from providing international assistance and aid programmes, to simple acts of kindness, i.e. assisting your neighbours and supporting your local communities, as well as displaying caring for others.

International Day of Human Solidarity serves as a reminder for individuals to create partnerships with one another and with the organisations they support locally and globally.
