 RUGBY

Rugby is a physically demanding and exciting team sport with a proud history that began in 19th century England. The sport originated in 1823 at Rugby School, where, according to legend, a student named William Webb Ellis picked up the ball during a football game and ran with it, creating a new style of play. This moment is widely regarded as the foundation of rugby football. As the game grew in popularity, formal rules were established, leading to the formation of organized competitions and clubs.

Rugby is played between two teams of fifteen players in Rugby Union, with the main objective of scoring points by carrying, passing, and kicking the ball across the opponent’s goal line. The sport emphasizes strength, teamwork, discipline, and strategy, requiring players to work together while maintaining respect for opponents and officials. Over time, rugby spread globally through British influence, becoming especially popular in countries such as New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, England, and France.

Today, rugby includes different formats such as Rugby Union, Rugby League, and Sevens, each with its own style and pace. Major tournaments like the Rugby World Cup and the Olympic inclusion of Rugby Sevens have increased its global appeal. Beyond competition, rugby promotes sportsmanship, unity, and resilience, making it a respected and inspiring sport worldwide.
