International Day for Preventing

The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict, observed on *November 6* each year, highlights an often-overlooked aspect of warfare — the devastating impact of armed conflict on the environment. While the world usually focuses on the immediate human cost of war, such as casualties and destruction of infrastructure, the damage caused to ecosystems, natural resources, and biodiversity is long-lasting and often irreversible.

During conflicts, forests are destroyed, rivers and water supplies are polluted, agricultural lands are left barren, and wildlife is killed or displaced. Environmental destruction not only harms nature but also affects communities' health, livelihoods, and access to essential resources. Post-war recovery becomes much more difficult when the environment is severely damaged, leading to further poverty, food insecurity, and displacement.

The United Nations established this day in 2001 to bring global attention to these issues and advocate for stronger international laws to protect the environment during armed conflicts. It also calls on governments, humanitarian organizations, and the public to recognize environmental protection as a key component of peacebuilding and sustainable development.

In a time where climate change and natural resource scarcity are becoming global concerns, the link between environment and conflict is more important than ever. Protecting the environment during war is not just about preserving nature — it is about protecting lives, ensuring justice, and building lasting peace.

Let us use this day to raise awareness, support peaceful conflict resolution, and advocate for policies that safeguard the planet, even in times of crisis. A peaceful world must also be a green one.
