International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, observed on 25 November, is a crucial day established by the United Nations to end gender-based violence. It serves as a global call for action to end violence against women and girls, one of the most widespread human rights violations in the world. Violence against women and girls is a widespread and pervasive form of violence.

Including physical, sexual, psychological and economic violence, it affects women at all levels, across all countries and societies, and is a devastating obstacle to equality, development, peace and the realization of women's human rights.Globally, an estimated one in three women will experience physical or sexual violence in her lifetime, including intimate partner violence (assault, psychological abuse, marital rape), non-partner sexual violence, human trafficking, child marriage, and sexual abuse. In addition to the personal suffering, violence against women has a public health and economic toll, and strains legal and health systems that hinder productivity.

The date was chosen to commemorate the Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa), three political activists in the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered on November 25, 1960, by the then dictator Rafael Trujillo. The symbol has become a powerful symbol of resistance against gender-based violence. This date marks the beginning of 16 days of activism, culminating in Human Rights Day on December 10. This period is dedicated to raising awareness and empowering people everywhere to make a difference.

Call to Action - Orange the World Each year, the UN Secretary-General's UNITE campaign to end violence against women by 2030 adopts a unique theme, calling for a "world of peace". The colour orange symbolises a brighter future free from violence.

What can be done - Preventing violence against women requires a multi-stakeholder approach that involves all sectors (Government & Policy makers, Communities and Institutions, Individuals, Media and tech companies)

Prevention is key,

The long-term goal should be to prevent this altogether. By eliminating gender inequality, eliminating discrimination, investing in education, economic empowerment, and changing patriarchal attitudes, we can create a world where violence is no longer tolerated.
