Fit For Life - Basketball

              Basketball

Basketball is a widely popular team sport that was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. He created the game as an indoor activity to keep his students physically active during the cold winter months. The first games were played using a soccer ball and two peach baskets as goals. The aim was simple: to throw the ball into the opponent’s basket to score points. Over time, basketball evolved with standardized rules, specialized equipment, and proper courts, becoming a structured and competitive sport.

Basketball is played by two teams of five players, each trying to score by shooting the ball through the opponent’s hoop while defending their own. The sport requires speed, agility, coordination, teamwork, and strategy, making it both physically and mentally demanding. With the establishment of professional leagues such as the NBA and international competitions like the FIBA World Cup and the Olympic Games, basketball has grown into a global phenomenon. Schools, colleges, and clubs across the world actively promote basketball, encouraging youth participation. Today, it is celebrated not only for athletic excellence but also for fostering leadership, discipline, and sportsmanship among players of all ages.
