World Suicide Prevention Day – September 10
π World Suicide Prevention Day –September 10
World Suicide Prevention Day is commemorated each year on September 10th to raise awareness about the global issue of suicide and to promote actions that can prevent it. The day is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), serving as a reminder that suicide is preventable and that collective efforts can save lives.
Every year, close to 800,000 people die by suicide, which means one life is lost every 40 seconds. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among young people worldwide, and its impact extends far beyond individuals, affecting families, friends, and communities. By breaking the silence and stigma surrounding mental health, we can create an environment where people feel supported and valued.
The theme for 2025 is “Creating Hope Through Action,” which emphasizes the power of both individual and collective efforts. Even small steps—listening with empathy, showing kindness, or encouraging someone to seek professional support—can bring hope to those who are struggling. It reminds us that each of us has a role to play in suicide prevention. In Sri Lanka, suicide prevention has become a national priority, with various initiatives and community programs helping to reduce suicide rates. However, much more needs to be done to strengthen mental health services and remove the stigma associated with seeking help.
On this World Suicide Prevention Day, let us remember that every life is precious. Together, through awareness, understanding, and compassion, we can offer hope and make a meaningful difference.
