World Patient Safety Day
World Patient Safety Day
World Patient Safety Day, observed on 17 September, is a global healthcare awareness campaign initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO). It aims to raise awareness and drive global action to prevent and reduce risks, errors and harms to patients in the delivery of healthcare. Safe healthcare is a fundamental requirement for ensuring quality care and building trust in patients and their recovery.
The observance brings together patients, the medical establishment, policymakers and the community to advocate for the safety of care, for clinicians and for policies and practices that can improve patient safety across all health-care settings.
History and Background
World Patient Safety Day was established in 2019 by the 72nd World Health Assembly through the adoption of resolution WHA72.6 - "Global action to ensure patient safety". The resolution recognized the critical need for coordinated international efforts to improve their safety, calling for an annual observance to promote awareness and action.
After previous initiatives such as "Clean Care Safe Care" (2005) and "Medicine Without Harm" (2017), both addressed specific areas of patient safety, WHO conceptualizes the day as a broader global patient safety challenge.
Objectives for the World's Patients
•To raise global awareness of patient safety issues.
•To encourage the collaboration of governments, health care providers, patients and families and their partners.
•To promote actionable strategies to reduce the burden of disease in the health care sector.
•To empower patients to actively participate in their care.
•To implement tools and professional training to improve safety perceptions.
World Health Day is marked by a range of activities around the world, including:
•Lighting of focal points (hospitals and monuments illuminated in the day's symbolic color)
•Workshops and webinars
•Patient stories and testimonies
•Policy launches and safety remediation
•Community health awareness drives
