 World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day, observed annually on November 14, aims to raise awareness of diabetes, a chronic health condition impacting millions globally. Initiated in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization , this day marks the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, co-discovered insulin in 1922 a breakthrough that transformed diabetes treatment.

Public health campaigns, educational seminars, community walks, and health screenings are common ways the day is observed globally. Such initiatives encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles and seek early diagnosis. Governments, healthcare providers, and communities collaborate to promote policies that improve access to treatment and support research for better management and potential cures.

World Diabetes Day emphasizes collective action to ensure everyone with diabetes can lead a healthy, fulfilled life. It stands as a beacon for advocacy and a catalyst for continued global efforts against this chronic condition.

The day serves as a critical reminder of the rising prevalence of diabetes and the urgent need for prevention and proper treatment. This years theme revolves around "Access to Diabetes Care" and addresses the challenges many sufferers face in accessing essential medications, technology, support and education. As more than 530 million adults around the world have diabetes, projections show that this number may increase if effective action is not taken. Likewise, everyone can prevent or control diabetes by taking care of it and adopting a proper lifestyle.
