World Post Day is celebrated on 9th October every year. This day was declared by the Universal Postal Union in Tokyo in 1969. Evidence about mail dates back to B.C. It goes back as far as 225. The Universal Postal Union was founded in 1874 and is headquartered in Bern, Switzerland. This is the second oldest organization in the world. The prepaid postage system started in 1838. The purpose of designating the World Postal Day is to identify the directions of the postal service through the social and economic approaches going forward with globalization. The Postal Service extends its services through a number of different services. In mentioning the directions and developments of the postal service, there is evidence that the world's first image was made into a stamp in the year 1849. And in the year 1912, airmail service started, leaving a new mark in the postal service. More than 150 countries around the world celebrate Post Day. And in some countries this has become a holiday. The International Telecommunication Union is important in mentioning Post Day. Postal policies are important as a focus for studying new services and developments.
At present, around 50 lakh people around the world are engaged in the postal service and its fields.When mentioning the postal service in Sri Lanka, the postal service in this country was started in the year 1798 under the initiative of the Governor Pedrick North. The stamp system began in 1857 with the release of the postage stamp featuring Queen Victoria. Post Office Day is celebrated with new postal products and services, post office functions, open days etc.
