World Food Day

 world Food Day

"The right to food for a better life and a better future" is the theme of this year's World Food Day 2024.  World Food Day, which was first celebrated in Sri Lanka in 1945, has been celebrated every year on October 16 under different themes since then.

We all know that the need for food cannot be restricted to just one day of the year.  Food is essential for all living things to survive.  There are still people in our society who can enjoy more than the required amount of food in a day, as well as people who cannot enjoy even one of the three main meals in a day.

The main reason for introducing a special day as World Food Day is to reduce the number of people suffering from hunger by ensuring a nutritious diet for all through worldwide awareness programs and promoting those actions.

It is a fact that is often heard through social media that even in such an advanced society, the percentage of children suffering from malnutrition in the world is still significant.  Currently, Sri Lanka is ranked 6th among the countries suffering from malnutrition.  It has also been reported that nearly 14 lakh Sri Lankan school children do not eat breakfast.  World Food Day focuses not only on food but also on water.  Drinking clean water is a basic human need just as food needs to be secured to quench hunger.

If you can quench the hunger and thirst of another person every time you can without thinking about the hunger of another person on the 16th of October only, that is the victory of setting aside such a day.

And there are many people in the society who have the ability to get more food than they need.  They should remember especially on such a day that they should enjoy enough food and not spoil the food. It is leo our wish that everyone in the world who is suffering from hunger can enjoy enough food.
