The Perahera festival, which is a key aspect of Buddhist culture, has been celebrated for a long time. Elephants can be considered the main contributors to the success of these events. Among them, the Wasana tusker can be recognized as one that provides a significant contribution.

This elephant calf, found lost in a forested area in the Anuradhapura District, was taken to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, and in 1978, it was offered to the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya by Vimala Kannangara, who was a minister at the time. Now, Wasana, known for its highly attractive and majestic appearance, is 50 years old. Wasana, considered an elephant belonging to the Mangala lineage, is a perfect example of the intelligence of elephants. Wasana shows great affection toward people dressed in white and behaves with extreme respect in the presence of monks. During its youth, Wasana faced various terrorist attacks and now exhibits fear toward gunshots, firecrackers, and similar sounds. Additionally, it does not like noisy or chaotic places where large crowds gather.

Among the rituals of the Ruhunu Kataragama Maha Devalaya, the ceremonial tusker Wasana holds a special place. During festivals such as the Esala Perahera, the Il Maha Perahera, and the New Year Perahera, the responsibility of carrying the sacred relics of the Kataragama deity lies with Wasana. Apart from the Kataragama Maha Devalaya Perahera, Wasana also participates in other famous Perahera festivals across Sri Lanka, including the Ratnapura Saman Devalaya Perahera, Getabaru, Seenigama, Kotte, and Kelaniya. A unique custom of this tusker is that, regardless of which Perahera it attends, before beginning its duties, Wasana brings a flower bouquet, raises its trunk, and pays homage to the Buddha and the deities. It repeats the same ritual at the end of the Perahera as well.

Therefore, the preservation of our country’s elephant heritage, including the Wasana elephant, is a responsibility for all of us. May the Wasana elephants gain strength and courage to fulfill their responsibilities for many more years to come.

බෞද්ධ සංස්කෘතියේ ප්‍රධාන අංගයක් වන පෙරහර මංගල්‍යය දීර්ඝ කාලයක් තිස්සේ පැවත එන්නකි.මේවායෙහි සාර්ථකත්වයට දායක වන ප්‍රධානම කොටස්කරුවන් ලෙස අලි ඇතුන් දැක්විය හැකිය. එහිදී මහඟු දායකත්වයක් ලබා දෙන ඇතෙකු ලෙස වාසනා ඇතා හැඳින්විය හැක.

අනුරාධපුර දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ කැලෑබද ප්‍රදේශයක අතරමංව සිට සොයාගත් මෙම ඇත් පැටවා පින්නවල අලි අනාථාගාරයට රැගෙන ඒමෙන් පසු 1978 වසරේදී එවකට අමාත්‍යවරියක වූ විමලා කන්නන්ගර, රුහුණු මහා කතරගම දේවාලයට පූජාකොට ඇත. ඉතා ආකර්ශනීය මෙන්ම තේජාන්විත පෙනුමකට හිමිකම් කියන වාසනා ඇතාගේ වයස මේ වන විට අවුරුදු 50 කී.

 

මංගල කුලයට අයත් ඇතෙකු ලෙස සැලකෙන වාසනා, අලි ඇතුන්ගේ බුද්ධිමත් බව පෙන්නුම් කිරීමට කදිම උදාහරණයකි. සුදු ඇඳුමින් සැරසුණු පුද්ගලයන්ට වාසනා ඉතා වැඩි ඇල්මක් දක්වන අතර භික්ෂූන් වහන්සේලා ඉදිරියේදී ඉතා කීකරුව කටයුතු කරයි. තරුණ වියේදී විවිධ ත්‍රස්ත ප්‍රහාරවලට මුහුණ පෑ වාසනා ඇතා රතිඤ්ඤා මල් වෙඩි ආදියට බියක් දක්වන අතර සෙනඟ ගැවසෙන ඝෝෂාකාරී මෙන්ම කලබලකාරී ස්ථානද ප්‍රිය නොකරයි.

රුහුණු කතරගම මහා දේවාලයේ චාරිත්‍ර විධි අතර දේවාලයේ මංගල හස්තියා වන වාසනාවට ලැබෙන්නේ සුවිශේෂී ස්ථානයකි. ඇසළ පෙරහර, ඉල් මහා පෙරහර, අලුත් අවුරුදු පෙරහර යන පෙරහර මංගල්‍යයන්හිදී කතරගම දෙවියන්ගේ දේභාවරණ වැඩමවීම වාසනා සතු වගකීමකි. කතරගම මහා දේවාලයේ පෙරහර හැරුණු කොට රත්නපුර සමන් දේවාල පෙරහැර, ගැටඹරුව, සීනිගම, කෝට්ටේ සහ කැලණිය ආදී ශ්‍රී ලංකාව පුරා පැවැත්වෙන ප්‍රසිද්ධ පෙරහර මංගල්‍යයන්ටද වාසනා ඇතා සහභාගී වේ. කුමන පෙරහරකට ගියද තමන්ගේ රාජකාරිය ආරම්භයට පෙර මල් මිටක් රැගෙන ගොස් සොඩය ඔසවා බුදුරජාණන් වහන්සේට හා දෙවිවරුන්ට වන්දනාමාන කිරීම මෙම ඇතාගේ චාරිත්‍රයක් වන අතර පෙරහැර අවසානයේදී ද ඒ අයුරින්ම වන්දනාමාන කරයි.

එබැවින් වාසනා ඇතා ඇතුළු අප රට සතු අලි සම්පත රැක ගැනීම අප සියල්ලන්ගේම වගකීමකි. තවත් වසර ගණනාවක් තම වගකීම් හරියාකාරව ඉටු කිරීමට වාසනා ඇතාට ශක්තිය ධෛර්යය ලැබේවා.
