 International Day of Peace

A Global Call to Harmony and Unity 🕊️🕊️

International Day of Peace, celebrated on the 21st of September every year, comes as a giant call for harmony and unity at a time when the world is torn apart by conflict and division. First initiated by the United Nations in 1981, it has since continued to be an annual worldwide reminder to embrace peace and come together at all levels—individual, community, and national—to a more peaceful and just world. Activities include peace marches, and vigils, educational events, and cultural performances in an effort to bring about a sense of non-violence and reconciliation.

The International Day of Peace found its inception in the early 1980s when the United Nations General Assembly saw the increasing need to have at least one specific day dedicated to promoting peace and had therefore passed unanimously Resolution 36/67. This was a resolution passed in 1981, stating that henceforth, the third Tuesday of September would be observed as the International Day of Peace, coinciding with the opening day of the regular sessions of the General Assembly. Now, the objective was clearly enunciated: to "commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples." It was in 2001 that this big change took place. The United Nations, at the request of Secretary-General Kofi Annan, recommended a fixed date for the observance of the International Day of Peace as September 21st of each year, regardless of the schedule of meetings of the assembly. This proposal was adopted, and since then, September 21st has been globally recognized as International Peace Day. The day was also declared as one of global ceasefire and non-violence, appealing to all the warring parties to stop hostilities.

As such, every year for International Day of Peace there is a different theme set; these reflect the current concerns and issues on the global agenda in regard to peace. The themes are selected by the United Nations, which provides inspiration and serves as a guideline for activities and discussion on this day. Indeed, the topics have covered a wide variety over the years in the areas of sustainable development, human rights, climate change, and disarmament—being the basic requirements of any lasting peace in the world.

The 2024 theme, "Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals," reflects the pressing requirement for collective action that needs to be taken toward realizing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. This theme tries to underpin the intrinsic relationships between peace and the global agenda of development, which is not just the absence of war or conflict but essentially the presence of justice, equality, and environmental sustainability. The theme of 2024, with an embedded focus on the SDGs, compels the need for all persons, governments, and organizations to double their efforts toward the endeavor for a more peaceful, inclusive, and resilient world.

The 2024 theme, "Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals," has hardly ever been so opportune, with a myriad of challenges that beset the world today. This theme highlights that without achieving the 17 global objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals, of which the United Nations took cue in 2015 to fight such burning issues as poverty, inequality, climate change, and justice, there could be no peace.

The year 2024 will be concentrated on the call to action, where concrete actions will be taken in all levels of life: individual, community, national, and international levels to advance peace and contribute to the realization of the SDGs. It therefore encourages governments to redouble efforts toward strengthening commitments to conflict prevention and human rights protection, as well as attainment of sustainable development, since peace is considered a key requisite for other developments.

The grassroots initiatives and role that civil society can play in their peacebuilding processes are further underlined as a theme. It makes a call to people to lay a personal responsibility on people to ensure that peace prevails within communities, be it through volunteering, activism, or simple things like the promotion of understanding and tolerance in everyday life. the 2024 theme continues to link peace with the SDGs by underscoring the fact that the quest for peace does not occur in a vacuum but is rather part and parcel of holistic efforts at attending to the sources of conflict and instability.

International Peace Day is observed globally through various activities and events that promote peace and increase awareness about the importance of nonviolence and ways to resolve conflict. These take many forms through educational programs and public speeches, cultural performances, and exhibitions on art. Schools and universities at all levels often hold seminars, workshops, and discussions on peace education, engaging students with critical thinking on how they could be an agent of change toward a world with more peace.

Across the globe, peace marches and rallies are conducted, where people from all walks of life come to show their unity for peace. Many faiths and spiritual communities around the world also celebrate International Peace Day with interfaith prayers and meditations to spread love and harmony between communities of faith.

One of the most critical activities done to mark the day is ringing of the United Nations Peace Bell at the UN headquarters in New York. The act, being performed since 1981, signifies the efforts by all nations and the human race towards a peaceful world. The Peace Bell, hammered out of coins collected from children from all over the world, was a strong symbol of hope and unity.

International Peace Day is more than a symbol. It is an appeal to bring all individuals, groups, and states into one common cause: the worldwide process of coming up with a world free of violence, wars, and injustices. As we observe this day in 2024, let us remember that peace remains within our conceivability and reach, not an ideal floating in some realm of the abstract, if all come together with a determination of steel and a readiness to remain committed to compassion, tolerance, and understanding. With the theme "Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals," we get an opportunity to walk toward a future when peace and justice become a reality for every living being.
