International Youth Day
A Celebration of Youth Power 💪👩🦰👨🦰💻⚽🧑💻🤳
"Achieving the Sustainable Developm Goals requires a seismic shift – which can only happen if we empower young people and work with them as equals. UN Secretary-General António Guterres International Youth Day, observed annually on August 12th, is a global platform dedicated to amplifying the voices, actions, and initiatives of young people. It is a day to recognize the potential of youth as partners in building a sustainable future and to address the challenges they face.
The concept of International Youth Day emerged from the World Youth Forum held in Vienna, Austria, in 1991. Young participants at the forum proposed the idea of a dedicated day to raise awareness about youth issues and mobilize support for youth-focused initiatives. In 1998, the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth officially recommended August 12th as International Youth Day. The United Nations General Assembly subsequently endorsed this decision in 1999, and the first International Youth Day was celebrated in 2000.
The theme for International Youth Day 2024 is "From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development." This theme underscores the pivotal role of digital technology in empowering young people to drive positive change. In today's interconnected world, digital technologies have become indispensable tools for communication, education, and economic opportunities. Young people, as digital natives, are at the forefront of harnessing the power of these technologies. However, the digital divide persists, with many young people lacking access to essential digital resources and skills.
The 2024 theme aims to highlight the potential of digital technologies to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It calls for increased investment in digital infrastructure, digital literacy programs, and youth-led digital innovation. By bridging the digital divide, we can empower young people to become active participants in shaping a sustainable future. Young people are a dynamic force for change. They bring fresh perspectives, energy, and creativity to address global challenges. From climate activism to social justice movements, youth are at the forefront of driving positive change.
International Youth Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of young people and to recognize their contributions to society. It is a time to invest in youth development, create youth-friendly spaces, and empower young people to become leaders in their communities. Despite their potential, young people face numerous challenges, including unemployment, poverty, inequality, and climate change. Many young people lack access to quality education, healthcare, and opportunities for personal and professional development.
To address these challenges, it is essential to create supportive environments that enable young people to thrive. This includes investing in youth-focused programs, policies, and initiatives that promote education, employment, and civic engagement. International Youth Day is a reminder of the importance of investing in young people and empowering them to shape a better world. By harnessing the power of youth, we can create a more inclusive, sustainable, and equitable future for all. As we celebrate International Youth Day in 2024, let us recommit ourselves to supporting young people in their endeavors. Let us create a world where every young person has the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute to building a better future for all.
