Every year on April 23, we celebrate World Book Day. Established by UNESCO in 1995, this international event serves as a vivid reminder of the transformative power of books and the importance of instilling a love of reading for all ages.The symbolic date chosen for World Book Day holds special significance for literature lovers. April 23 marks the anniversary of the death of literary giants William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcillazo de la Vega.
This year's theme is "Read Your Way". This theme emphasizes the importance of choice and enjoyment in fostering a love of reading. However, it encourages both children and adults to find ways to connect with books that resonate with them, regardless of format or genre.2 days are used for World Book Day. Namely, the Valencian author Vicente Clavel AndrΓ©s first proposed the day to coincide with a celebration of Miguel de Cervantes. Either October 7 is his birthday or April 23 is his death.
The latter date was chosen because it coincided with the deaths of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilazo de la Vega. Of course, a number of other famous writers have also passed away on April 23.Although UNESCO is behind the creation of this day, some nations observe it on other days of the year. For example, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Ireland all hold their World Book Day celebrations on different dates. However, since its inception in 1995, the International Day has always been celebrated on the same date.
World Book Day is not just a day to appreciate great literature. It is a call to action, reminding us of the multiple benefits of reading.
